- Sir, I cannot be an officer because I have a Jewish grandmother!
- Georg tells his commanding officer about his Jewish heritage. He is dropped from the officer training course the next day.
- Georg is leaving for war in Russia.

- After a long trip, Georg is assigned at the front. He is constantly sick and the Russians attack often. He continues to write to his family though.
- Over the period of the book, the Russians continue to push the Germans back and there have been many close calls. He was eventually stationed in Romania, where there was not much action.
- When the Russian tanks were approaching their position, Georg and his friend, Konrad decided to desert and hide among the soldiers going home. Unfortunately, the soldiers going home were re-assigned.
- Georg and Konrad where re-assigned to defend against the Russian tanks but they were easily overrun. Georg and Konrad managed to survive but are behind enemy lines.
