Aulthough she eventually got married to a person with a good sum of money, she wanted more. To go to a dance, she needed a new dress and everything. She has to borrow a necklace from her friend.
It was only worth about 500 franks!
When leaving the dance, she had such a fun time that she did not notice that her friend's necklace was gone. Both her and her husband were now checking everywhere for it, and formulated a plan to get it back. They would buy her a new one.
They save up lots of money, and borrow lots of money to buy the friend a new identical necklace to replace the old one and it takes several years to pay the debt off.
She meets up with her old friend and finds out the necklace was worth only a fraction of what they bought the replacement for.
