- Macbeth and his friend Banquo discover that Macbeth will be thane of Cawdor, and then king. They are also told that Banquo's children shall be kings. Two assistants to the king, Duncan, inform Macbeth that he is indeed thane of Cawdor, and Macbeth realises he is destined to be king.
- Lady Macbeth discovers this by letter, and vows to make sure Macbeth becomes king, at any cost. She realises Duncan is coming there on that night, therefore it is her only chance to please her husband.
- After much deliberation, Lady Macbeth convinced Macbeth that they needed to kill Duncan. They created a plan to kill Duncan whilst the guards were drunk, then blame the guards.
- After the guards are drugged, Macbeth sneaks in and stabs Duncan. He then cleans himself up and puts the knife with the guards.
- Another thane, Macduff, arrives and finds the king dead. Macbeth blames the guards and kills them in a fit of rage. Since they are dead, they cannot plead innocent, therefore all of the evidence points to them. Duncan's two sons, Malcolm and Donalbain, both flee, but in the process are blamed for murder.
