  • Macbeth has recently become the king of Scotland. After talking to Banquo he invites two men into the castle. He is hiring these men to murder Banquo since Macbeth is afraid that Banquo is suspicious of him and because he was told that Banquo would have many descendants that are kings.#160;
  • And though#160; I could with barefaced power sweep him from my sight and bid my will avouch it, yet I must not... masking the business from the common eye for sundry weighty reasons.
  • We shall, my lord, perform what you command us.
  • After sending the men to kill Banquo, Macbeth meets with his wife. He hints at what he has done but doesn't tell her that he is planning to kill Banquo and Fleance, but tells her to be nice to them. He has become much more willing to kill, but at the same time has become more distant from his wife. He is now using his power to try and keep himself in control. - Lady Macbeth talks first.
  • Be innocent to the knowledge, dearest chunk, till thou applaud the deed. -Come, seeling night, scarf up the tender eye of pitiful day and with thy bloody and invisible hand cancel and tear to pieces that great bond which keep me pale
  • What's to be done?
  • The two murderers go out and find Banquo and Fleance. They are able to kill Banquo, but Fleance gets away as his father yells at him to run. The guards get distracted and the light from the torch goes out allowing him to get away. They go back and tell Macbeth what happened. Because Fleance got away the prophecy can still be fulfilled.
  • There's but one down. The son is fled.
  • O treachery! Fly, good Fleance, fly, fly, fly! Thou mayst revenge-O slave!
  • Macbeth gets the news as to what happened. He doesn't seem too concerned and goes to have dinner. While eating he sees Banquo's ghost appear at the seat that was saved for him. Macbeth addresses the ghost and asks who is doing this. When he vanishes he makes a toast to Banquo, but when he comes back he becomes more furious. The banquet ends and Macbeth goes to find the witches.
  • To the ghost - Thou canst not say I did it. Never shake thy glory locks at me.
  • Gentlemen, rise. His Highness is not well.
  • In this scene, we are introduced to the witches and the leader of the witches, Hecate. The witch wants to take charge of what they are doing with Macbeth. She wants to show Macbeth visions that will lead to his demise. She says that they will all meet at the pit of Acheron. She believes that Macbeth is selfish and rude, which is why she wants to lead him to his demise.
  • I'll catch it ere it come to ground, and that, distilled by magic sleights, shall raise such artificial sprites as by the strength of their illusion shall draw him on to his confusion. He shall spurn fate, scorn death, and bear his hope 'bove wisdom, grace, and fear. And you all know, security is mortals' chiefest enemy.
  • Here a Lord named Lennox, along with another lord, walk and talk about their suspicions of all these killings. They talk about Fleance's guilt since he fled like Malcolm and Donalbain. They discuss Malcolm's acceptance into England and his request to create an army to overthrow Macbeth. It seems that Macbeth is behind this with all the people he is claiming to love, dying.
  • Advise him to a caution what distance his wisdom can provide. Some holy angel fly to the court of England and unfold his message ere he come, that a swift blessing may soon return to this our suffering country under a hand accursed
  • He did, and with an absolute 'Sir, not I,' the cloudy messenger turns me his back and hums, as who should say 'You'll rue the time that clogs me with this answer.'
