  • Exposition: Introduce Tom, Sid, Aunt Polly, and Mary. The author also introduces the setting and how much Tom gets into trouble.
  • Ugh.... why do I have to do work on a Saturday!
  • I don't want to white wash this stupid fence!
  • Rising Action:We get to see how Tom reacts to certain situations. We learn that Tom gets into trouble quite a lot and he likes to be in control. We are also introduced to Becky Thatcher, his love interest.
  • Climax/Conflict: Injun Joe kills Dr. Robinson, but convinces Muff Potter he killed him. Tom and Huck Finn have to live with the guilt of keeping this secret.
  • We are introduced to Tom, along with his family members, Sid, Mary, and Aunt Polly. The story starts with Aunt Polly looking for Tom, and she finds him, then punishes him for skipping school to go swimming.
  • Falling Action: Becky and Tom get stuck in a cave, but they are able to get out. Tom and Huck also find treasure and Injun Joe, and they try to catch him.
  • We get to meet Becky, who is Tom's love interest. He fancies her very quickly. Tom also gets into trouble often, causing him to be seen as a troublemaker. An example of this is when he tricks numerous boys into giving him trinkets to whitewash the fence. We are also introduced to Huckleberry Finn, who is viewed as a ruffian in the town.
  • Resolution: Injun Joe is found dead in the cave. Huck and Tom also find the treasure and split it. Huck is also taken in by Widow Douglas but he does not like to be proper.
  • The climax is also the place where the conflict is introduced. Tom and Huck Finn snuck out to perform a ritual with a dead cat, and they see Dr. Robinson, Muff Potter, and Injun Joe. Injun Joe stabs Dr. Robinson, getting revenge on Dr. Robinson's father, then Muff Potter hit his head on a rock and passed out. When he woke up, Injun Joe convinces Muff Potter that he killed Dr. Robinson, and Muff Potter is told to the police and locked up until his trial.
  • Huck and Finn are burdened with the knowledge that Injun Joe is the real killer, and they are scared to tell the police. Tom can't take it anymore, so he tells the police and testifies against Injun Joe. Injun Joe flees, and Tom and Huck are restless once again. At Becky's party, Tom and her go into a cave, where they get lost and are stuck for days. At one point, Tom runs into Injun Joe, but Tom runs away.
  • Becky's father, Judge Thatcher, decided to block the cave with a metal door so no one gets stuck in there again. Tom tells Judge Thatcher that Injun Joe is in there, and they unlock the door. Injun Joe is found dead on the floor, where he has tried to break open the door and ate candle pieces to try to survive. Huck Finn is also taken in by Widow Douglas, but he hates not having freedom. Tom convinces him to stay.
