  • Jimmy wants to be a NASCAR racer however he does not know anything about the physics behind it. So he asks his professor Mr. K.
  • Mr. K what is the physics behind racing?
  • Mass is coherent, typically large body of matter with no definite shape.Distance is the amount of space between two things.Velocity is the speed of something in a given direction.Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity per unit of time.Force is the strength or energy as an attribute of physical action or movement.Work is an exertion of force overcoming resistance or producing molecular change
  • Mr. K loves cars and science so of course he was happy to explain he starts by explaining balancing
  • So the physics behind racing starts off with balancing a car which is controlling weight transfer using throttle, steering and brakes. The effects of weight transfer are proportional to the height of the CG off the ground. For example a flatter car, one with a lower CG, handles better and quicker because weight transfer is not so drastic as it is in a high car.
  • Second it involves all of Newton’s three laws. The 1st law is the law of motion a car in straight-line motion at a constant speed will keep such motion until acted on by an external force.”
  • The second law is when a force is applied to a car, the change in motion is proportional to the force divided by the mass of the car. A heavier car reacts more slowly to forces. Newton’s second law explains why quick cars are powerful and lightweight. So jimmy you better get a lightweight car if you want to be number 1 always
  • The third law is when you apply the brakes, you cause the tires to push forward against the ground, and the ground pushes back. As long as the tires stay on the car, the ground pushing on them slows the car down.
  • The last physics behind racing is analyzing braking the middle part of a car is the force of gravity that pulls the car toward the center of the Earth. This is the weight of the car; weight is just another word for the force of gravity. We don’t often notice the forces that the ground exerts on objects because they are normal, but they are at the essence of car dynamics. The reason is that the magnitude of these forces determines the ability of a tire to stick, and imbalances between the front and rear lift forces account for understeer and over-steer.
  •
  • After Mr. K explained everything and asked Jimmy if he was still interested in racing he left Jimmy with a overwhelming face and Jimmy said
  • Yes I will just stick with racing the cars and not learning the science of how they work, ill leave that to you Mr. K“
  • Overall jimmy that is the physics behind racing it involves Newton’s laws mainly, are you still interested in being a NASCAR racer?
