  • One person that has influenced me over the years would definitely be my mom. She is the strongest person I know. She is the biggest example of "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger". She has seen so many things over the span of her life, but everything just seems to make her more determined and headstrong than she was before. Just last year, she lost her father and her uncle, and earlier this year, she saw me in a near death situation. Sure, she was knocked down for a while; not motivated to do anything. But this would only be for a few weeks. Once she processes everything that happens, she just says "This is a sign that life is short, and we can't stop doing what we love for anyone," which is one of the biggest lessons anyone has ever taught me. My mom will forever be my biggest hero and most influential person in my life.
  • One event that influenced who I am today was seeing my sister for the first time. When I first saw her, I felt like I needed to be more responsible, set a good example for her. From that point onward, I made sure to always be the best person I could be, not just for myself, but for my sister. Before she was born, I never really worked hard for anything. Being the only child, everything was just handed to me. I took everything for granted, so I never really thought about how I behaved. I don't really know how to explain it, but when I saw my sister for the first time in the hospital, everything changed. I like to think that this is where I first learned the importance of setting an example for people.
  • The book "Wonder" by R.J. Palacio really had a big impact on how I view myself. I always struggled with body image and insecurities about how I looked every day. After reading "Wonder" in 5th or 6th grade, I felt a little bit better about myself. I realised that everyone felt a little insecure from time to time, but the book helped me realise that everyone is unique and that looks aren't the only things that matter when it comes to a person. From then onwards, little by little, I stopped obsessing over how I look and focused on building friendships that are genuine, and don't focus on the physical appearance of people.
  • COVID-19 was a huge event for everyone, not just me. That doesn't change it's significance on my life though. So much happened when we were all quarantined, and if I learned something from all of it, it's that we should absolutely never take anything for granted. During 8th grade, which was during the whole lockdown situation, I lost 5 family members due to COVID, and I saw many friends and family suffer with the virus. It took a toll on my mental health for a while, not getting to meet my friends or see anyone for months at a time. But thanks to the support from my mom and dad, me and my sister managed just fine. The virus still scares me to this day, but it's taught me that we have to be grateful for all the support we get from family and friends. This doesn't only apply to COVID; it applies to every event that anyone will come across in their lifetime.
  • Just a couple months ago, I was hospitalised for 23 days for a rare disease called Acute Eosinophilic Pneumonia. Yes, I know, I thought it wasn't that serious as well. I've had pneumonia before and it wasn't bad at all; I stayed in the hospital for 4 days just to be on the safe side and I felt good as new. This wasn't the case in February, though. AEP is very rare and no one knows the exact cause of it. I went into respiratory failure and had to go on ECMO, which is the highest level of life support. Even though it was very critical and could've been fatal, I definitely learned a lot from that challenge. I was with nurses and doctors, and I found out just how important it is to not take everything for granted, and that from working hard, you can overcome even the biggest obstacles. Every single person on the medical staff showed me that, and I am forever grateful for them.
