  • 1 month later.
  • A type of Speciation called Temporal Isolation is responsible for this. While dogs may breed at any time of the year gray wolves follow a strict breeding season mating for a few weeks after the winter.
  • Now that we have decide to be together I was wondering if we could expand our faminly and kids.
  • Hey can I ask you one more thing?
  • Yes of course.
  • Ok I understand.
  • What! No! We couldn't possibly.
  • I'm sorry let me explain. Only the Alpha male and and female of the pack are allowed to mate and they do so a few weeks after the winter. But now that I know how you feel I will work hard to become the alpha so we can have children.
  • 3 months later.
  • I have earned the rank of Alpha and it is even breeding season so if you would like we can get to work on those kids.
  • Honey, I have to tell you something important.
  • What is it?
  • Oh Yay! Yes Lets GO!
  • A few months later.
  • The End
  • The dog has smaller teeth than a gray wolf as well as being able to have different colour coats while gray wolves have coats that are white, gray, and black with hints of Brown. These are variations as they are random and heritable mutations in genes that have been accumulated over generations.
  • That's it! The markings!
  • I must be a descendant of the wolves captured by the humans way back then.
  • Why do you look so different though? Your coat is brown so how do you camoflauge? Why are your teeth so small?Do you have to hunt without these useful tools.
  • Natural selection is responsible for the gray wolf's evolution in the wild. Being able to blend into their environment and have stronger bites were desirable variations leading to the wolves that first developed them having more biological fitness and passing the traits on. Artificial Selection played a role in the dog's evolution as humans selectively bred them for desirable characteristics such as smaller teeth to appear more friendly and to have various colours.
  • Well let me think. I got all my food from my human so I never had to hunt to need camoflauge. I guess my food was also always in small pieces so my teeth size wasn't an issue either.
  • Oh I get it now. Its still a little surprising to learn that we are related.
  • Yeah!
  • A few months later.
  • A common misconception of evolution is that because it is so slow that humans cannot influence it. Humans separated the gray wolf population and domesticated a portion that has had changes to the point where it is now a subspecies of the grey wolf.
  • I have to tell you something. I am really enjoying our new life together. I'm so happy and I want to be with you forever!
  • Oh wow! I wasn't expecting that just now. I really like our life too. I would be happy to spend the rest of my life with you!
  • Yay!
