Linking WWII, Korean War and Vietnam Together

Kuvakäsikirjoitus Teksti

  • WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam
  • Even though we fought in different wars, we all fought to defend the values, such as freedom and democracy, we as Americans uphold.
  • The US and the USSR emerged as the world superpowers at the end of WWII, and an ideological conflict between these two powers began.
  • The Korean War and Vietnam were conflicts between the US and the USSR. The US, under the containment policy, wanted to stop the spread of communism. Korea and for a time Vietnam were divided into communist north and democratic south. Korea is still divided today.
  • The United States still has troops in South Korea near the 38th parallel. Direct US involvement in Vietnam ended in 1973 and eventually reunited as one country.
  • The US was afraid that if Vietnam became communist the entire region would fall to the USSR. This was known as the domino theory. Unlike the Korean War, protests against the Vietnam were held at Jackson State and Kent State.
  • Our role in Korea and Vietnam was debated then and our role in the world is still debated today.
