Egeus comes to the king Theseus and his fiancée Hippolyta because his daughter Hermia is not obeying his command to marry Demetrius. Instead, she is in love with Lysander. If she doesn't obey her fathers cammand, Egeus says she will either be killed or become a nun.

Lysander and Hermia plan to escape Athens through the forest at midnight. Hermia's friend Helena overhears this plan, and plots on telling Demetrius to get him to notice her.
