  • Gandhi led India to independence using non-violent protests and strategies. Finally, on August 15, 1947 India gained its independence from British colonial rule.
  • In a gentle way you can shake the world.
  • As India gained their freedom from Britain of August 15, 1947 they were separated into two nations. They were partitioned due to tension between Hindus and Muslims. India became mostly Hindu. Pakistan became mostly Muslim.

  • Due to the partition of India, millions of people were forced to move because they lived on the wrong side of the border. This was one of the largest migrations of people in history. About 12 million people became refugees and many died. Violence rose between groups of Muslims and Hindus.
  • Gandhi began visiting troubled areas to end the violence between India's religious groups. On January 30, 1948 he was on a vigil in New Delhi. A Hindu extremist, Nathuram Godse, shot and killed Gandhi because he disagreed with his tolerance for Muslims.
  • Independent Pakistan had two parts, East Pakistan and West Pakistan. East Pakistan had much less political and economic power. In 1970, the Bhola Cyclone hit East Pakistan causing more devastation. Many died and more became homeless, without enough relief from the government.
  • The miserable treatment led the people of East Pakistan to rebel.  This rebel heightened to the war of independence. They declared independence on March 26, 1971 and became Bangladesh.
