Texte du Storyboard

  • Annie Applegate was born in 1934, in Dale, Ohio. When she was 3, she was dumped into a mental institute.
  • When she was 16, she worked for Woods, Inc. There she made tables with other kids. But it was backbreaking.
  • It was also dangerous. Accidents happened often, and many kids got hurt. Including me.
  • School, not work!
  • When she was 17, she walked out with child workers Amy Droy and Sam Wassar.
  • No more child labor!
  • Unsafe conditions!
  • This was when I wrote my autobiography, The Puppet's Ink. I explained how companies that used kids as workers didn't give the kids much money, but the company thrived.
  • This landed them a jail sentance of 5 years.
  • In 1959, the Kids Worker Act was passed. It said that kids had to be at least 13 before they started working at least 6 hours a day. It also said the pay had to be good, and the kids were in safe, pleasent cobnditions
  • After I got out of jail, at age 22, I lead more protests. One was the Roundy Grapes Boycott. For two years, nobody bought grapes from Roundy Grapes, who had their child workers in unsafe grape de-seeding conditions. Eventually, the government made them have safer regulations for safety.
  • In 1958, Annie was awarded the Children's Welfare Award for her work to make working conditions safer for children
  • Timeline of my life-1934- Born in Dale 1937- Left in orphanage. 1950- Started factory work in Woods, Inc. 1951- Protests unsafe working conditions. Gets arrested 1956- Gets out of jail. Countinues work. 1958- Wins Children's Welfare Award. 1978- Forms LPA.
  • Laborer ProtectionAgency
  • In 1978, Applegate formed the Laborer Protection Agency (LPA). Even though child labor is now against the law, there are workers who are treated unfairly. This is now what Applegate stands for. She is now 88 years old.
