  • What to do if I am a Passenger During a Traffic Stop
  • Glisser: 2
  • Sometimes when I am riding in the car with someone, I might see red and blue flashing lights behind us. That means a police officer wants to talk to the driver. This is called a traffic stop.
  • At first, I might feel surprised or nervous. That's okay! Traffic stops happen to lots of people, and the police just want to make sure everyone is safe.
  • Glisser: 3
  • When the lights come on
  • The driver sees the flashing lights, they slow down and pull the car over to the side of the road.I stay sitting in my seat with my seat belt fastened.I don’t get out of the car (unless the officer asks me).
  • Glisser: 4
  • The police officer comes to the driver’s window and talks to them. The driver rolls the window down to speak.

  • What I do?
  • If the police officer talks to me, I can answer politely. I can answer:"Yes" "No" or "I don't understand" if I need to. It's always okay to ask the officer to repeat or rephrase if I didn't hear their question or understand.
  • While this happens, I can stay quiet and calm. I can keep my hands in my lap or where the officer can see them. I let the driver do the talking.

  • If I start to feel nervous
  • If I need to use something that helps me stay calm, like a fidget, noise-canceling headphones, sunglasses, a communication card, ect. I ask for permission first and keep my hands where the officer can see them. I can say: "I have something that helps me stay calm. Is it okay if I reach for it?" Then, I wait until the officer says it's okay. When the officer gives me permission, I tell them where I am reaching and move slowly and carefully to get the item.

  • Sometimes I feel my heart beat fast or my hands fidget.I might feel overwhelmed, anxious, or scared. That’s okay too.I can take a deep breath (in through my nose, out through my mouth)and remind myself, “We are safe. The driver and the officer are just talking.”
  • If I carry a Blue Envelope or a communication card,I can tell the officer:“I have a Blue Envelope and/or a communication card in the glove box. May I hand it to you?"This helps the officer understand that I might:Need more time to process instructionsUse short or simple words to communicateUse a support tool to stay calmOr prefer less noise or bright lightsThe officer might say, “Yes, that’s fine,” and let me get the item slowly. That helps the stop go smoothly and keeps everyone safe.
  • The officer finishes talking to the driver, and they walk back to their car. The driver starts driving again. I feel proud that I stayed calm, respectful, and safe.
  • Traffic stops happen for many reasons:-Remind the driver of a traffic rule (speeding, cell phone use, etc.)-To let the driver know there is something wrong with their car (broken light, no signal, something is dragging from the car, etc.)-Making sure the driver and passengers are safe-And more! They are all part of how the police make sure everyone is safe on the road. I know everything will be okay when I follow directions, stay calm, and communicate my needs!
