- I have been told that my baby has Down syndrome. What does that mean and is it my fault?
- “Down syndrome means your baby was born with an extra chromosome — something that happens before birth.”

- I did some research online and I discovered that the age of the mother is a factor. I was 40 when I gave birth.
- It is great that you did some research. I am happy to give you context. While maternal age is a factor, paternal age, and very frequently, a random error during cell division can also play a role. That is why it is said to be random.
- Everyone has chromosomes, which are tiny instruction books in our cells. Normally, we have 23 pairs, but in Down syndrome, there’s an extra copy of chromosome 21.”
