There was once a small girl named Mary Ellen, who lived in the castle with her parents. Mary Ellen and her family moved to the castle after learning they were long lost heirs to the throne. The move was very difficult on Mary Ellen, as she no longer spoke the same as all of her friends, and was often made fun of. As time went by, she would come to realize the way she spoke was unique to where she was from.
I don't want to go to the ball, Mother. All of the kids laugh at me because of my accent.
That is only because you are not from here, and you did not learn to speak here. All children learn to pronounce words from listening to those around them.
I can't believe you talk like that! You sound so uneducated!
Mary Ellen got the courage to go to the ball, but her excitement only lasted a little while. Soon the other kids were making fun of the way she spoke, and even worse, the former Prince (from the former royal family) was choosing to make fun of her! Mary Ellen knew the process of learning to speak began at a very young age, when infants and toddlers attempt to mimic how those speak around them. How, she wondered, would she ever be able to undo all that she had already learned?
Mary Ellen sounds so silly when she talks!
