  • The streets were always alive with the chatter of men not women, the hum of markets, and the noise of boys rushing to school, but girls like Zara, seventeen years old, were kept inside, hidden behind long walls of ruthlessness and coldness and rules, the ones which had no rights, no right to speak or committee something without men’s concern.
  • Afghanistan was a country of mountains and history, but also of strict traditions that chained women with strict rules which were heartless and full of coldness. Education for girls was known as unnecessary, even dangerous as they thought the girls would get out of hand and become away from traditions.

  • Zara grew up in a house where her brothers’ education was celebrated and enjoyed . Whenever one of them passed an exam, sweets were bought and relatives congratulated her father
  • Your future is marriage not learning
  • But when Zara taught herself to read by listening to her brothers, no one clapped for her, either anyone celebrated with sweets for her.Instead, her mother said: “Books will not feed you, Zara. Your future is marriage, not learning.”
