  • What is a Political Party?
  • Political parties are organizations that bring people together who share the same specific ideological or policy goals.
  • Purpose of Political Parties
  • Recruit candidates and support campaigns.Operate Government Influence Public Policy Inform/Involve citizens Monitoring actions of officeholders
  • Some things Political Parties can do:
  • Interest groups are a group of people that seeks to influence public policy on the basis of a particular common interest or concern.
  • What are Interest Groups?
  • Purpose of Interest Groups
  • What are things that Interest Groups do?
  • -Provide funds-Organize influence in government -Influence public policy-make independent expenditures,-advocate issues, -mobilize voters.
  • Political Parties are responsible for informing citizens on what gun rights they have and what the rights include. Democrats and Republicans (and others) are able to show their stance on the issue, and back up how much/how little government should be involved with the 2nd amendment. They let the people listen to their reasonings, and then the citizens are able to support/ not support their stance on the issue.
  • Interest Groups are there to have a stance on an issue, and provide the organization/funds to support it. For gun control, the NRA is a huge example. A membership group consisting of members who promotegun rights. The modern NRA has become a prominent gun rights lobbying organization while continuing to teach firearm safety and competency. They use their organization to support candidates who back gun rights. Different than political parties, they provide the involvement of funding of a specific group rather than citizen involved
  • Political Parties VS Interest Groups GUN CONTROL
  • Republicans tend to support gun rights while Democrats tend to support stricter gun laws/regulations.
  • Political parties: One strategy they use is voter education. They have a strong interest in motivating and instructing voters to use their votes correctly. For example, parties may train their supporters to support gun restrictions. They will point out deaths caused by machine guns or introduce new gun laws and why they are important. If you agree, They will encourage you to vote for them because you agree with their stance on the issue.
  • Strategies About Gun Control: Education
  • Interest groups: they tend to educate the public by sponsoring research and disseminating the findings through public relations campaigns. Interest groups educate both their own constituency and the public. Through their publications, the groups keep members updated on what they support. The NRA has a grant foundation where they "Promote, advance and encourage firearms, shooting sports and hunting safety."
  • Lobbying is interest representation is the act of lawfully attempting to influence the actions, policies, or decisions of government officials, most often legislators or members of regulatory agencies.
  • For example, in 2019*2020, the total amount of money in PACs for Gun Control was $1,431,154. $1,424to democrats and $19,730 to republicans. Clearly democrats support gun control more, so more PAC money is received for that party.
  • Strategies for Interest Groups.: Lobbying/Pacs
  • In 1975, the NRA began attempting to influence policy directly via the Institute for Legislative Action. In 1977 it formed its own Political Action Committee (PAC), to channel funds to legislators. The NRA spends about 3 million per year, and in 2014 3.3 million dollars were spent in lobbying. The NRA strongly lobby's against gun control.
  • A PAC is a 527 organization that pools campaign contributions from members and donates those funds to campaigns for or against candidates, ballot initiatives, or legislation.
  • Strategies for Political Parties: Media
  • Different Political parties can use the media to see what their supports stance is on an issue. Using twitter for example to see how many people supported gun control vs who opposed, and what voting patterns they tended to have.
  • Another use the media has to political parties is how they are able to influence/inform the public. We saw this heavily with President Trump. He constantly used twitter to inform his supporters of hi actions/ what was going on in the White House. He easily influenced his supporters on Gun Control with his tweet, "I will be strongly pushing Comprehensive Background checks with an emphasis on mental health..." (Feb 2018)
