- Spain took over central and south America and now Spanish is one of the most common languages.
- We cannot forget about Portuguese! Portugal took over some of South America leaving their language in Brazil.
- Language is a HUGE part of Latin America!
- During the 1500s and 1600s, Roman Catholicism was the leading religion of both Portugal and Spain. the colonists brought this religion to Latin America with them and taught it to the Indigenous people. As a result, Catholicism is the main religion of Latin America.
- Different religions celebrate different traditions and customs. The Day of the Dead is celebrated in Mexico and family come together to pray for family and friends who have passed.
- The Europeans wanted to find a new source of slaves and started to import form West Africa. Then the slave trade became a triangle trade between Europe, North America, and Africa.
- In south America, plantation economies prospered thanks to African slave labor. Many countries started to import slaves from Africa.
