  • Every time Maya finishes her homework without being asked, her mom gives her $5. Maya didn't used to do homework on her own, but now she does it every day. This is acquisition, she's starting to connect finishing homework with getting a reward. The $5 is Positive Reinforcement because something good is being added to increase the behavior.

  • Sorry Mr. Salemo ill pay attention now so you don't have to take my phone again.
  • Maya gets caught on her phone in class and the teacher takes it away. This is Positive Punishment because an unpleasant stimulus which is losing the phone is added to decrease the behavior. Now Maya pays attention in class to avoid getting her phone taken again. That's Negative Reinforcement and she's removing a bad outcome by doing the right thing.

  • Remember class I only update grades at the end of the semester!

  • Maya's teacher only gives out grades at the end of every semester no matter how much work she turns in. This is a Fixed-Interval schedule because reinforcement happens after a set amount of time. Maya also learns that doing homework gets her rewarded, but goofing off in study hall does not. This is Stimulus Discrimination and she responds differently to different situations.
