  • The Cuban RebellionCubans burned American Sugar Can Plantations in Cuba. Cubans used Yellow Journalism to make the U.S. help them.

  • Spain sent their best general Valeriano Weyler along with 150,000 troops to Cuba to stop the rebellion.

  • Weyler forced 100,000 Cubans to guarded reconcentration camps with very little food and sanitation.

  • The U.S.S Maine had an explosion on February 15, 1898, killing 250 Americans. The U.S.S. Maine protected American citizens and property in the Havana Harbor. Spain was blamed for the explosion.
  • President McKinley didn't want war, but the Americans wanted war. Instead, McKinely demands the Spanish for Compensation for U.S.S. Maine, an end to reconcentration camps, a truce in Cuba, and Cuban independence, but Spain refused for Cuban Independence.
  • In December 1898, the U.S. signed with Spain and Spain recognizes Cuban Independence, this is known as the Treaty of Paris. Spain gave 20 million dollars to the U.S. along with the Philippines, Peurto Rico, and Guam.
