  • Ethos
  • "Five score years ago a great American in whose symbolic shadow we stand today signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree is a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice."
  • Pathos
  • "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
  • Logos
  • "But 100 years later the negro still is not free. One hundred years later the life of the negro is still badly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later the negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity."
  • Martin Luther King Jr. used Abraham Lincoln who signed the Emancipation Proclamation as a way to relate to everyone since Abraham Lincoln is a great historical figure which many people know, which relates to them with ethos.

This note was a promise that all men--yes, black men as well as white men-- would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
  • MLK talks about his kids in his speech to let everyone know and feel bad that his family is being treated poorly just because of the color of their skin, which relates to their emotions by using pathos.

  • MLK brings up that Negros have been treated poorly for 100 years which is a very long time, that would be using logistics or logos.
  • Logos
  • "America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked 'insufficient funds, and so we have came to cash this check."
  • MLK brings in that the founding fathers of the country gave rights to all men and that everybody should respect them and what they said, which uses ethos.
  • MLK talks a little bit about how Negros are being treated at the time to make people feel a bit bad for them, which uses pathos.
  • MLK relates what is happening to money which everybody understands by saying that they are being handed bad checks and white people are being good checks which is logos.
