- A young man named Salva Dut is at a refugee camp in Ethiopia after he lost his friend, his family, and his Uncle. He is here to try and be safe from the Sudanese Civil War.
- It might not be the best thing in the world, but at least I am safe... for now.
- But, in the year of 1991 the government of Ethiopia got mixed up, making all refugees leave their country. Soldiers drived them toward the Gilo river, where they shot those who took long, but crocodiles were also there to eat.
- Leave Now!
- Why are they doing this to us!?

- That very day, Salva had somehow turned into the leader of thousands of boys, and as a group, they made themselves walk for a year and a half to get to Kenya seeking for safety.
- Alright, we can not live out here. I know we are tired and scared, but we must keep going. One step at a time.
