- Julia and Winston are in bed. They hear the prole woman singing. They say, "We are the dead."
- Julia and Winston realize there is a telescreen behind the picture.

- St. Clement's Chruch
- Stomping boots, house surrounded
- “Here comes a candle to light you to bed / Here comes a chopper to chop off your head!”
- Julia and Winston hear a familiar voice (Mr. Charrington) speak the last lines of St. Clement's rhyme. (He is actually a member of the Thought Police.)
- The window shatters and black-clad troops pour in
- The paperweight is smashed. The troops restrain Winston and beat Julia.
