- Francie's trip to the library allows her to broaden her horizons. She sees the library as her own haven and sanctuary even though it was shabby. She loves books so much that she wants to read all of them. Even though the library clerk doesn't smile or talk to her, Francie docent let that discourage her.

- When Francie gets home, she sees her dad, Johnny Nolan, walking up the stairs from his job. She sees him drinking, but knows that he is not a bad person, just a bad father,

- As Francie irons her dad's apron for his job, he talks about his life while drunk. She feels bad for him and for her mom.

- After she had seen Papa go, Francie goes to the factory where Flossie Gaddis works at to see what costume she's wearing for the dance. She is told by Flossie to say that Henny, her 19 year old brother, who is sick with consumption, to say he looks good. Henny docent believe them

- When Henny starts coughing badly, the three women decide to leave him alone

- Francie's mom, Katie, comes home from the movies with Aunt Sissy, who Francie is really close to. Since Sissy works at the rubber factory, she sells them for half the price
