- When the USA made the Jay Treaty with Britain, France thought it violated their previous treaty. The US also refused to aid France in its war with Britain, deciding to remain neutral. France responded by capturing over 300 American ships trading goods with Britain.

- If you want the French to stop attacking your ships, you have to give us a $250,000 bribe and a $10 million loan!
- Adams sent three delegates to try to make peace with France. They met three spies known only as X, Y, and Z. When the delegates were told they had to pay a huge bribe to have peace talks, they decided to fight France instead.
- Absolutely not. We will fight! Millions for defense, not one cent for tribute!

- After Adams worked to improve the Army and Navy, he captured over 80 French ships. Then peace was made with France!
- Dude, this is getting annoying. We need those ships for our war with Great Britain. Peace?
