- Part of the conflict is that there a lot of racism which is shown when the black students get the books that the white students got rid of because they were old.

- Cassy bumps into Lillian Jean so Lillian Jeans dad, Mr. Simms pushes Cassy down and makes her apologize.

- Papa's leg broke when the wagon fell on it and he was shot in the head.
- R.W. and Melvin break into the house to try to get T.J.
- Papa has to set the cotton on fire to get the night men to leave.
