- During the John Adams presidency the United States faced some serious troubles and conflicts with the French. The French ships were seizing American ships because France was angry that the U.S was trading with Britain. So Adams then sent American deployments to go negotiate with the French officials demanded before even talking angering the United States and the public.

- After the XYZ affair ,many Americans had demanded a war against France because the French would attack their ships. But John Adams chose a different path by strengthening the navy while avoiding a full war.This conflicts become then known as the Quasi -War, which was a series of naval battles fought at sea.

- By 1800, many Americans were unhappy with John Adam's presidency . His decisions, and especially the alien act and sedition act, which turned voters against him.Thomas Jefferson then won the election making the first peaceful transfer of power between political parties.John Adams then became a one term president, but his presidency helped define limits on government power.
