- Sacrifice
- Eddie met the Captain in heaven at the same spot where the Captain had died. The Captain says "smallpox" from up in the trees, which catches Eddie's attention. This leads to a conversation that has Eddie going up into the trees where he finds out he has been speaking with the Captain.
- The main conflict is that the Captain decides to shoot Eddie. He had to make a choice whether or not to shoot him, or let him run into the fire. The Captain decided to shoot Eddie to keep his promise of leaving no one behind, and he would die if he ran into the fire.
- The lesson that the Captain shares with Eddie that you gain from sacrifice. One of the things he mentions is that although the Captain sacrificed Eddie's leg by shooting it, he still gained something from that, even if he doesn't know it yet.
