- Troy's statement to Cory reveals his belief that being a father is about duty rather than love. He says, "Let's get this straight... I ain't got to like you" (Wilson 40). He values authority and obligation over affection. This makes him come across as harsh and unyielding, especially in how he deals with his family.

- Troy forbids Cory from playing football and insists he has no opportunity. "The white man ain't gonna let you get nowhere with that football noway" (Wilson 37). Troy tell Cory that he has no chance to play because of racial barriers. He believes that Cory doesn't have a chance and wants to put a shut down on his dreams.

- Glisser: 3
- Rose expresses that Troy is someone whose actions quietly drain the people who love him. Rose says , "You take and don't even know nobody's giving" (Wilson 68). Tory doesn't just hurt people in obvious ways, he slowly exhausts them by benefiting from their love, care, and sacrifice without fully recognizing what it costs them. There are supporters around them and he takes it for granted.
