  • Toussaint launches a slave insurrection in Saint-Domingue in 1791 in the sake of slave liberation, freedom, and equality.
  • Slaves began torching plantations and murdering their owners in 1791. As a result, Leger-Felicite Somthonax was able to abolish slavery in the colony in 1793. Toussaint joined up with the Spanish troops against the French in the same year.
  • Toussaint's warriors battled against the French government, invaders, Royalists, and leaders from 1791 until 1799. Due to the costly conflicts, the French government began to contemplate the idea of abolishing slavery in 1801.
  • Toussaint defected from the Spanish army in 1794 and joined the French. Between 1795 and 1801, Spain surrendered Saint Domingue to the French.
  • Slavery was reestablished in the French colonies by Napoleon in 1802, after it had been outlawed for some time. He dispatched 70 vessels and 25,000 troops to the island of Saint Domingue.
  • Toussaint was apprehended and imprisoned in the French Jura Mountains at Fort-de-Joux. He died of pneumonia and atarvation on April 7, 1803. The Battle of Vertieres was the revolutionary army's ultimate victory over Napoleon's army. Haiti gained independence from France in 1804.
