- Jacob Riis took photos of the victims of The Poverty Projector and their unbearable living conditions in tenement houses.

- Jacob Riis compiled these photos along with descriptive writing into a book titled "How the Other Half Lives." It instantly gained a lot of attention and successfully spread awareness of the country's poverty. This pushed citizens and powerful leaders for new legislature to improve the conditions.
- The New Tenements Act was passed in 1901 to enforce that all tenement houses have a working bathroom and source of light, and ventilation.
