  • Patrick Henry was born in 1736 in Virginia and was educated by his father. After struggling to find a successful career, he opened a law firm in 1760. Throughout his life, Henry gave speeches which appealed to reason and were very passionate.
  • In 1763, in his first major legal case, Henry gave a speech that said the British monarchy had become tyrannical by overruling Virginia law.
  • After the passing of the Stamp Act in 1765, colonists were upset that they had no representation in congress. In response, Henry gave a speech arguing against British overstep that introduced several resolutions to Virginia law, which were soon adopted by other colonies.
  • In 1775, during a meeting to discuss Virginia’s strategy against Britain, Henry gave his most famous speech, ending with “Give me liberty, or give me death!” No transcripts of this speech exist however, so it’s not known for sure if this quote is real.
  • After the Revolutionary War, Henry became an Anti-Federalist and opposed the ratification of the U.S. Constitution. In response to the Federalist Papers, Henry helped write the Anti-Federalist Papers.
  • Though the U.S. Constitution was later ratified, the Anti-Federalist Papers would later serve as the blueprints for the Bill of Rights. On June 6, 1799, Henry died from stomach cancer.
