  • In the late 19th century and early 20th century, work and living conditions were horrendus. Despite forming 80% of the population, farmers were taxed ruthlessly by the Tsar. The sanitation was poor, there were no unions and no income tax. In response, opposition grew and the Tsar was forced to grant basic civil rights and universal suffrage; only for the educated, however.
  • The 1917 Revolution
  • Once the workers banded together and got 150,000 signs on a petition for change, they were mistaken for a threat and got shot by the guards while gathering outside the winter palace peacefully. It created a wave of massive political unrest in Russia and workers going on strike, which was deemed The 1905 Revolution. Tsar Nicholas was forced to implement some reforms that were the bare minimum.
  • Vladimir Lenin
  • When there is state there can be no freedom, but when there is freedom there will be no state.
  • The outbreak of the first World War in 1914 only escalated the issues in Russia. Food shortages were at a high and due to poor leadership skills, many lives were lost in the war. Despite the minimal changes back in Russia, people like Jimmy stayed sick and workers kept going on strike. The issue in Russia was only avoided by the Tsar.
  • Bolshevik Red Army
  • Due to the lack of proper change and disastrous outcome of World War I, the people continued to protest and go on strike. The Tsar was forced to abdicate the throne. After this, Vladimir Lenin and the communist bolshevik party took control.
  • Once the Bolshevik party had taken control, Lenin gained the control of peasants through the promise of land, peace, and bread. Shortly after war communism had taken place; the swift transfer to communist system.
  • The Bolshevik army, also known as the red army, was the army that was formed by the communist party. It was used to overthrow the Tsar and then used to reinforce Bolshevik rule
