- There was an old widow which lived on a farm with her two daughters. She also owned a beautiful red rooster named chanticleer.
- Chanticleer had seven wives, one of which he loved more than the rest named pertelote. Chanticleer had had a dream about something wanting to kill him and later told Pertelote.
- Pertelote Tells him that a dream is just a dream and will not actually happen. "And can a dream reduce you to such terror?Dreams are a vanity, God knows, pure error."
- the conversation continues and chanticleer proceeded to explain the story of the man that had a dream about dying at sea and actually did.
- Chanticleer stays up in a tree with is wife as the fox lays below. The fox replying, “Faith, it shall be done!”Opened his mouth and spoke. The nimble bird,Breaking away upon the uttered word,Flew high into the treetops on the spot
- the fox grabs him and takes him a ways from the trees. He explains to chanticleer that he did not mean to hurt or scare him in any way, he just wanted to teach in a lesson of morality.
