We used the sails, AND the Oars to make us extra fast.
Egypt1500 BCEGalley
The Egyptians took their ideas of the sails, and the oars and made the Galley, a ship with a huge square sail and lots of people with oars rowing as well. This gave them wind power as well as human energy so no matter what happens they could always keep moving.

We built off the Egyptians by using the idea of sails!
Benefiting from the Egyptian years of Collective Learning, Europeans created the Carrack ship, a strong, sturdy ship that had 6-8 sails and different compartments. It was often used for transporting food and supplies over long distances in the 15th -17th centuries.

The French were the first to take the idea of a steam engine in 1785. The engine powered a giant circular propeller that pushed the massive ship forward from the back without stopping and the steam came from two chimneys on the top. There were also many levels and compartments for supplies and people too.
Now we have a steam engine to power our boats!
