- There was a slave named Frederick Douglass. He was born onto a plantation in the 1800's. As a child he didn't know his own birthday and didn't know how to read or write. He never really knew his dad, and his mom would rarely walk to see him from the other plantation where she lived. He was sent to a new plantation and his masters name was Mr.Covey and Covey was not a nice man.
- One day Douglass was working in the field and he couldn't get up. When he fainted, the fans on the wheat fanner stopped and Covey sprinted all the way from the house to see what happened. When Covey got there he asked, "Where is Frederick?". A slave named Eli replied, "He passed out." Covey told Douglass, "Get up" but Douglass couldn't, so Covey gave him a blow on the top of his head.
- Douglass ran away and ran into the Cornfield. Covey ran after him and he couldn’t find him so he gave up so Douglass walked into the cold, dark, nasty woods. Douglass spent most of his time trying to find out if he should go back to the plantation. He met another slave named Sandy in the woods and he told him what happened. “Should I go back to the plantation? If I do he might whip me. I don’t know what to do.” Sandy replied, “You should go back to Covey’s.”
