Working Class Challenges
People like my family that chose to move to large cities faced low wages and poor living conditions. We lived in crowded tenement housing, did not have clean water, and had poor sanitary conditions. The factories we worked in were dirty and had lots of pollution. I did not have any educational opportunities so I worked 12-16 hours a day in the factories.

Social Reform Movements

Many people in the working class argued the conditions of factory workers like myself were unfair. As a result, labor unions started to fight for worker’s rights and there was a push for child labor laws. There were also reforms for women’s rights and more education for both children and the public.

Rise of Corporations
Capitalism was an economic system that was very popular based on private ownership. Another concept that developed in this time was socialism, which is the collective ownership of resources and the factors of production. New business structures emerged in this time that included shared ownership through assets. For the first time, factory workers like my family could own shares in the company that it worked for.
