- Andrius, I'm . . . Scared.
- No. Don't be scared. Don't give them anything, Lina, not even your fear.
- I can't help it. I'm not even used to this camp. I miss home, I miss my father, I miss school, I miss my cousin. I don't want to go.
- Shh. Be careful who you talk to. Don't let your guard down, okay? I don't want you to go.
- Hide them. Keep them safe for me. I don't want them to be destroyed. There's so much of me, of all of us in these drawings. Can you find a safe place for them?
- There's a loose floorboard under my bunk. Its where I hid Dombey and Son.
- Andrius goes to Ulyushka's shack that the Vilkas family was ordered to live in. Later in the night, after telling Lina that her family was on the list of people that the NKVD was moving, Andrius goes to talk with Lina. Lina is scared and Andrius tries to comfort her. (Sepetys 243.)
- You have to keep drawing. My mother says the world has no idea what the Soviets are doing to us. If other countries knew, they might help.
- I will.
- Andrius takes Lina for a walk and she expresses her fear and how much she misses everything. She does not want to leave Andrius and Andrius doesn't want her to go either. (Sepetys 243-244.)
- Just promise me you'll be careful. Don't me stupid and go looking for files or running under any trains.
- Lina suggests they go back to her shack where she takes out all her drawings from the lining of her suitcase. She hands them to Andrius insisting that he keeps them safe and hidden. (Sepetys 244.)
- Andrius is amused by Lina's perfect drawings. He demands her to keep drawing because it can be useful in helping them become free. (Sepetys 245.)
- Andrius tells Lina to be careful wherever the NKVD takes them. They smiled and Lina kisses him goodbye. (Sepetys 245.)
- Lina watches as Andrius takes off, with the drawings in hand and the touch of his lips still warm against her neck. (Sepetys 245.)
