  • How Human Activities Accelerate Erosion
  • Most deforestation is done by humans to clear out vast land for the use of food production. This has been going on all throughout history, even centuries ago to create agricultural land. Urbanization is also a cause of deforestation.
  • One of the biggest human activities that alters the earth is deforestation, which affects wildlife, ecosystems, and even the climate Earth systems.
  • Deforestation ultimately causes soil erosion and accelerates the rate of it, because of how the soil becomes dry and loses nutrients due to the fact there is no vegetation from the loss of trees. This can also disrupt food chains of tropical ecosystems.
  • Eighty percent of Earth’s land animals and plants live in forests, and deforestation threatens a lot of different species that call forests their home.
  • Almost half the world's topsoil has been lost to erosion, and according to data provided by the Rainforest Conservation Fund, deforestation is a direct cause of the erosion happening in tropical rain forests. This topsoil is extremely important to the health of the overall soil. With the loss of this topsoil, more soil can be carried into the waters when it rains.

  • There are many consequences that come from erosion and deforestation.
  • Soil erosion can cause huge losses to the economy and agriculture industry. One study estimated global economic losses from soil erosion to be around $8 billion, due to reduced soil fertility, decreased crop yields and increased water usage
  • Another consequence of soil erosion is how erosion allows for fewer plants, which means less plants that absorb CO2.
