  • In this scene, Benvolio tries to get Romeo tell him the reason for his sadness, which makes him act alone and depressed. Romeo says it was Rosaline, whom he loves, but doesn't love him back, who was the reason behind his misery. Benvolio listens to his cousin's rants about his experience with love.

  • "Out of her favor, where I am in love" (Shakespeare 1.1.158).
  • Lady Capulet asks Juliet's thoughts on marriage, to which Juliet responds that she hasn't given it much thought yet. Her mother initiates a conversation, mentioning how she gave birth to Juliet when she was her age and trying to convince her about marriage. Lady Capulet starts to inform her of Paris' admiration; Juliet assures her mother that she will make an effort to at least look into him during the feast.
  • "Thus then in brief: The valiant Paris seeks you for his love" (Shakespeare 1.3.76-77).
  • Act 1, Scene 3
  • Romeo takes Juliet by the hand as they converse, using hand and lip metaphors to describe their movements. Juliet informs him he kissed like he learned how. Later on, the nurse calls Juliet because her mother called her. Romeo asks the nurse who Juliet's mother is, and he discovers it's Lady Capulet, the rival of his family.
