- In 2016, it contributed $87 billion, or 3%, to Canada's gross domestic product, directly or indirectly. Across the same year, it created 596,000 employment (403,000 direct jobs) in the country's urban, rural, and remote regions. Erosion of the cleared ground surface and dumped waste material causes sediment loads in nearby water bodies, especially during rainy seasons. Mining has a wide range of environmental consequences, which aren't restricted to current operations.
- How does the use of mining impact Canadians?
- Mining can pollute air, harm wildlife and habitat, and permanently scar natural landscapes. Mining also causes water pollution which includes metal contamination, increased sediment levels in streams, and acid mine drainage.
- Mining operations can maximize their efficiency and sustainability by taking a two-pronged approach of reducing inputs (such as diverting surface water and pumping groundwater, or using alternative energy sources like solar or wind) and outputs (by using cleaner production techniques and reusing mine waste and by-products).
