The hero, Narcissus, whose beauty was so great, all the girls longed to be his--even Echo, the loveliest of nymphs. But he had no interest in any of them.
May he who loves no others love himself.
Hera cursing Echo. She will never use her tongue again, except to repeat the words of others.
Farewell--farewell.
Narcissus went in search of his companions. When he called, Is anyone here? she repeated, Here---Here.. He shouted, Come!, and she answered joyfully, Come!, and stepped away from the trees. But he turned in angry disgust, Not so. I will die before I give you power over me, and all she could do was repeat, I give you power over me. But he had already left.
One of those whom he wounded prayed a prayer and the gods answered. She prayed that he would fall in love with himself.
As Narcissus bent over a pool for a drink, he fell in love with himself. He died while staring at his own reflection.
When the nymphs went in search of his body, they found the most beautiful flower where his body was supposed to lay. They called it by his name, Narcissus.
