In The Monster Are Due on Maple Street by Rod Serling, One of the main themes is Mankind is its own worst enemy for 3 reasons/examples. One example is on page 675 where the people of Maple street blame Les Goodman woman one made a statement explaining “I’d see Mr Goodman here in the wee hours of the morning standing out in the front of his house looking up at the sky as if... as if he were waiting for something as he was looking for something.” Woman One was talking to the residents on maple street explaining how she also thinks that Les Goodman is an alien for looking in the sky late at night/ early morning. Then another example with Charlie after everyone was upset at him for showing Pete Van Horn on pg 681 “I swear to you, I do know who it is. I know who the monster is here. I know who it is that doesn’t belong here. I swear to you I know”. Trying to take the attention and the blame off him, Charlie was trying to tell them that he is not the alien but he knows who is which led to the residents wondering and pressuring him into telling them who’s the so-called alien. Lastly on pg 682 the residents of Maple Street had a chaotic rage throughout their whole neighborhood. Charlie told everyone Tommy was the “alien” which had everyone in a rage. Don thought Charlie was the alien Woman one thought it was Les Goodman, Mrs. Goodman thought Steve called them. Everyone was breaking things and possibly planning to harm each other. The theme of Monsters are due on Maple street was a teleplay that is based on mankind and how they can destroy each other in the worst ways possibly with lies, blaming each other, thoughts, feelings, actions etc.
