Welcome back, now that we're in the classroom I would like to discuss engaging parent participation.
First, in order for parents to be engaged they have to know what's going on in school. So, I propose that teachers should collaborate to create a weekly or bi-weekly newsletter to be given to parents physically or electronically that outlines upcoming units and events. At the bottom of the newsletter should be a space for parents to send in any comments or questions.
This week in Social Studies we will be going over Manifest Destiny...In Math, ....Science...etc.

One of the primary ways of parent communication that I'd plan to utilize is what I'd call open e-mail / Office hours. Parents will receive a letter at the beginning of the year with my email and a link to either a zoom call that will be open at regular intervals or a scheduling system if the regular hours don't work for some parents.

Another imperative line of communication is calling home. Usually, calling home has a negative connotation to it, however a teacher can also call parents to discuss positive aspects and to directly ask parents for comments and concerns. This way, teachers can show parents they have genuine interest in their child's success and will be more inclined to collaborate.
Hi there, this is your child's teacher! I just thought I'd call to discuss their achievements and any concerns you might have.
It's no secret that social media has become an integral part of everyday life for many people. I believe it's in our best interest to embrace and use these technologies to their best potential. The GettingSmart article suggests using closed pages to foster community amongst parents. These can be set up to have pages for each teacher or for groups of teachers, depending on how a school is structured.

And those are some of the ideas that I have to engage parents and give them platforms to collaborate and address comments and concerns for their students! Having multiple channels of communication available allows for greater flexibility and encourages participation.
