- Grief
- "In filial obligation for some term To do obsequious sorrow. But to persever In obstinate condolement is a course Of impious stubbornness. 'Tis unmanly grief."
- Love?
- "And with no less nobility of love Than that which dearest father bears his son Do I impart Toward you."
- Uncle or Father?
- "married with my uncle, My father's brother, but no more like my father Than I to Hercules."
- In this scene, the King is criticising Hamlet for his grief over King Hamlet Senior. Claudius is basically calling Hamlet a stubborn baby and an idiot.
- Hamlet Finds Out The Truth
- "Haste me to know't, that I, with wings as swift As meditation or the thoughts of love, May sweep to my revenge."
- During this quote, by Claudius, Claudius is telling Hamlet that he loves him. He also mentions that he is Hamlets father. This is surprising for the readers as Hamlet hates Claudius for marrying Gertrude so soon after Hamlet seniors death.
- Spy
- "So by your companies To draw him on to pleasures, and gather So much as from occasion you may glean, Whether aught to us unknown aff licts him thus That, opened, lies within our remedy."
- During Hamlet's soliloquy, he explains his frustration with Claudius and how Claudius is not his father.
- The Play
- "The play's the thing Wherein I'll catch the conscience of the King."
- In this scene, Hamlet has an interaction with the Ghost where Hamlet finds out that Claudius killed Hamlet senior. Hamlet is furious is is determined to plot revenge. This adds to the conflict by giving more reason as to why Hamlet is so mad at Claudius.
- In this scene, Claudius is basically forcing Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to spy on Hamlet. This adds to the conflict because it shows how Claudius does not really trust Hamlet and that he is controlling over Hamlet.
- In this scene, at the end of Act 2, Hamlet is explaining his plan to prove Claudius's guilt. This adds to the conflict because it showshow Hamlet plans to act towards Claudius and it also somewhat foreshadows later encounters between Hamlet and Claudius.
