I am enjoying the time I have before I head out for war. I never wanted to be in the army, but I was forced to join. At least there are no riots today. But there are a lot of people leaving...
I go and ask someone why they are leaving, and they tell me that the plebeians, all of them, were leaving the city because they had no rights. As a rebellious act, they are going onto a nearby hill and camp there. They said we would not return until the patricians gave them rights. This might be the greatest decision of 494 BCE, or of the history of rome.
We waited up on that mountain for a few days we knew we would not have to wait long, because without workers, and an army, Rome would quickly collapse. Under one week later, a messenger was sent, saying that the Romans needed us and we should return. When we did, we were given more rights.
We could elect officials into the Tribunes of the Plebs, Later, we gained the power to veto or overrule choices and laws that the patricians made. We could also elect a counsel of plebs, which makes laws for just the plebeians, not the patricians. But we still were not equal. There were 200 years of more fighting and "plebelions".
First, we demanded that laws be written down, so they could not be changed at ease. The patricians agreed in 451 BCE to write the laws down. Next, in 367 B.C.E. a new law was made that one of the two consuls must be a plebeian. Finally in 287 BCE, we earned the right to pass laws to the other Roman citizens
The number of plebs in the senate began to increase, and we finally became equal with the patricians. We, Rome, created an example for many different kinds of government. I knew that one day, there would be a place in the future where our government would be.
