- Why did Texas join the United States! They are a part of us!
- How dare they!
- The famous Texas Revolution came from Texas fighting Mexico for its freedom. Thanks to the generals and the volunteers Texas won, making it a new republic.
- The US Offer
- I'm offering 25 million for Texas, New Mexico, and California. Great deal!
- Texas was struggling as a new republic and decided to join the united states to help them manifest destiny. Both sides agreed and Texas became the 28th state of the union on December 29, 1845.
- Disputed Area Skirmish
- Withdraw from Mexico territory! Your are strongly outnumbered!
- Meanwhile Mexico was refusing that Texas was its own republic that could just join the United States. They thought that Texas didn't have the right to join the United States.
- Battle of Palo Alto
- James Polk sent John Slidell to give an offer to Mexico to buy Texas, New Mexico, and California. Slidell offered 25 million, Mexico rejected the offer and took it as an insult to their national honor.
- No, we won't take your offer!
- The Mexicans thought that the border of of Texas was at the Nueces River. Americans believed the border was at the Rio Grande. On June 1845 the president of the US sent American troops to the disputed area that the countries couldn't decide upon. Mexicans demanded a withdrawl. Americans were outnumbered and several died. Both sides fought and declared war upon each other.
- Never!
- On May 8, Zachary Taylor comes as backup with an army of 3400 men. Now the Americans have a strong lead with their horse artillery and defeat the Mexicans.
- Back off out territory!
