  • Duke is a dog who is learning the trick of how to "roll over" by his owner.

  • When Duke's owner tries to get him to "roll over" using a piece of broccoli as a treat, he starts to play instead of "roll over" so his owner decides to not give him the broccoli (negative) as punishment.

  • Roll over = get treat
  • Duke is now starting to realize that if he follows what his owner wants him to do, he will get the piece of broccoli.

  • When Duke finally "rolls over" his owner gives him a treat (positive) in hopes that he will do the trick again (reinforcement).

  • Duke's owner gives him a piece of broccoli each time he "rolls over" (continuous) so that he begins to understand that he will be rewarded for doing the trick.

  • This is not a treat for you Duke.
  • Now anytime Dukes owner has something in her hand, Duke will "roll over" thinking it is a treat for him to receive.
