  • Mr Tan was a very hardworking man.He sold vegetables,fruits and chicken
  • Opening a dispensary
  • When he became rich,he started to help the Chinese community.He was a very generous community leader.He took care of the burial expenses of the poor in the Chinese community. He also donated some of the money to build the Chinese Pauper Hospital in1844. It was built to serve the poor. It was then renamed Tan Tock Seng Hospital to honour his contributions.
  • Dr Veerasamy Naidu, one of the indian doctors in Singapore. He was intrested in using herbal medicine to treat illnesses. He spent his leisure hours reading books related to medicine. He also learnt Western medicine when he was working in a dispensary.
  • Later on, Dr Naidu opened his own dispensary along Rochor Road, where he used traditional Indian and Western medicine to treat his patients. He became a well-respected leader in the Indian community.
