- The Pardoner begin his tale by saying he whenever he preaches he lives on the same text that greed is the root of all evil. He tell everyone in the tavern about a story of 3 brothers that want to kill death after learning that death have killed an entire village and that now death own the village now.
- Greed is the root of all evil.
- The 3 brothers when to the village but they didn't find death they instead found a sickly old man. The old man say that he has live so long that death refuses to take him. The 3 brothers think that he is death's lookout and ask him where death is the old man tell him where he is. The 3 brothers go where the old man said and they find gold they plan to move the gold out and split it. the younger brother get send to the village and gets poison because he don't want to split the gold with the other two brothers. The other brothers plan to kill the younger one by stabbing him to death.
- What are you doing here?
- You must be Death's Lookout where is he?
- I left him over there by that tree.
